Habitual Gestures

Areas of Research

we conducted 3 sets of experiments under the topic of “interrupting habitual gestures” having ourselves as the interruptions in the experiments.

Experiment 1: Interrupting Body Language

Asking 2 people sets of questions related to their daily lives. During the second round of questions, setting some rules like lifting their arm when they use filler words, jumping when the time in the story they tell changes etc. Comparing the movements and gestures of both participants.

Experiment 2: Interrupting Gestures

Asking 2 people sets of questions and stories to tell. Everytime they use their gestures and body language, limiting and blocking their movements by holding their hand, mimicking them.

Experiment 3: Unexpected Movement in Conversation

Asking people morally challenging questions in the middle of a daily conversation. Making unexpected body movements as they talk and recording their responses.

Conclusion

As we have analyzed, the power of habits lies in the repetition and unconsciousness. They usually happen unnoticed until there is a clear and active interruption made by another person.
