Nomad Manifesto
One might think that the term refugee is pretty recent.
It is indeed true that we are facing
a refugee crisis right now and we may see measures taken
in our daily lives, in our countries, or living environments.
This did not that just start happening, but in fact exists
as long as we have been living on this planet.
Take for example the birth of Christ.
He was born as a refugee.
Populations are on the run and going from one place
to another.
Most prehistoric people lived as nomadic tribes.
The Sami tribe is more or less still traditionally living
based on the movement of the reindeers,
not recognising borders.
What happened to this way of living today?
Today most people abandoned the nomadic lifestyle
and settled in a fixed spot somewhere in the world.
Especially in the global north,
almost everyone has a house that they can call their own.
In the Netherlands housing prices are getting higher and higher
due to the high demand and low offer.
In the past young families could easily get a place of their own.
They now have to wait to get a house and start a family.
Wealthier people own multiple houses and even earn from them.
Money is the reason why these people are in power over space.
Due to this already existing housing crisis there is
no place for refugees, who came empty handed.
To end this crisis we must reconsider the way we will live.
Nomadic living may be the answer.
We tested different parts of our previous research with this life sized installation. The shelter adapted to a space within an already existing building. With this we made a more livable place taking protection, privacy and comfort into account.
