Experiment: Power Relations (Familiar Setting)

Based on our previous experiments, we wanted to find ways to break the power that being put in a higher position gives us. To do so, we created a setting in which one person gets the task to read a text to another person. To compare different situations, we changed the position of the receiver and gave the deliverer additional tasks (like speaking very loudly or quietly, exaggerated movements, wearing costumes). In every scenario, we changed only one parameter to make the settings comparable.

Results:

• power of higher position can be broken through actions/ instructions: bending down decreases power

• dressing up gives us power

• familiarity and to know what is going to happen adds to comfort
