Light Movement & Calligraphy

Understanding the subtle nuances of nonverbal communication, particularly through body movement, can play a crucial role in interpersonal interactions. This experiment aims to explore how the fluidity of body movement, inspired by the elegant strokes of calligraphy, can shape and enhance communication. By documenting these movements through the medium of light, we capture not only the physical trajectories but also the intangible essence of expression. Through this approach, we aimed to uncover profound connections between visual language and human interaction, offering new insights into the ways in which our bodies convey meaning beyond spoken words.
We arranged a darkened space, incorporating a projector, camera, and speaker, in preparation for our experiment. Initially, participants observed calligraphy displayed in various languages projected onto the walls, with the option to move or remain still. Subsequently, participants held small Lume beam lights while listening to foreign language audio from the speakers, coordinating their movements accordingly, while we captured their actions via long exposure photography.
The findings of this experiment were highly intriguing. We successfully compared movement images across individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, revealing both differences and similarities in their expressions.
