Music into drawing

Research question

How does each genre of music (Classical, Contemporary, and Minimal) influence the choice of colors and lines in participants’ drawings?

  1. Are there consistent visual elements that emerge across different participants’ drawings when they listen to the same genre of music?

  2. What patterns, if any, can be identified that correlate specific musical characteristics with particular visual styles or elements in the drawings?

Experiment

In this experiment, participants were exposed to three different genres of music:
Classical, Contemporary, and Minimal. While listening to each type of music, they were asked to draw whatever came to mind. The aim was to observe how different musical genres influenced their artistic expression, focusing on elements such as colour usage, line types (curved or straight), and overall composition.

FINDINGS

    1. Impact of Music Genre on Artistic Expression: The experiment revealed that different music genres influenced the participants’ artistic choices in distinct ways. Classical music tended to inspire more intricate and detailed drawings, often with a wider range of colours and more elaborate compositions. Contemporary music, on the other hand, resulted in more abstract and varied styles, with bold colours and diverse line types. Minimal music generally led to simpler, more focused drawings, often with limited colour palettes and clean, straight lines.
    2. Common Visual Elements Across Participants: Despite the individuality of each participant’s artwork, certain commonalities were observed when the same genre of music was played.
