Drawing sounds

Research question: How can we imagine space only by hearing it?

Experiment approach: how do you hope to gain this knowledge? Through translating sounds into drawings, exploring how different sounds can be represented visually and how this process can reveal personal memories and associations.

Experiment overview: participants listened to 8 different sounds, such as supermarket, museum, lecture, and street. Later, they were asked to imagine and sketch the space they hear within 3 minutes.

Experiment outcomes and findings:

1. Time limit encouraged to focus on key features of the sound.

2. We used similar well-known associations to sketch the space. For example, the sound of ‘scanning’ means drawing a self-service cashier.

3. Soundscape can be used as a design method to combine multiple environments.
