Power of Knowing

Research Question: How does the absence of instruction (knowledge) influence people’s behaviour within a group where others have specific instructions?

Experiment Approach: The experiment used body intervention and comparative testing, creating different levels of knowledge within the same group. After the first test, we simplified the instructions and repeated the experiment. Participants’ responses and interactions were documented through observation, filming, and scoring.

Experiment Overview: In the first experiment, participants received one of three conditions: two groups were given different tasks, while a third received blank papers with no instructions. We then repeated the experiment with only two conditions—one group received a specific task, while the other received no instruction—to make the contrast clearer and observe whether uninstructed participants would follow others.

In the first experiment, one participant without clear direction began copying the behaviour of others. After simplifying the experiment, participants without instructions did not follow the instructed group. The familiar and friendly environment appeared to reduce the power of the intervention, leading us to explore spatial instructions rather than written instructions in the next experiments.
